澳中关系可以更上一层楼 Australia-China relations can be better and move further
It is gratifying to see that following Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham's recent visit to China for the Shanghai International Import Expo, a number of Australian and Chinese enterprises have signed 11 major business agreements with a total value of nearly $15 billion. Immediately thereafter, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne visited Beijing on 8 November. This is the first time Australia's foreign minister has been invited to visit China in three years and has held a formal official meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Last three years, the China-Australia exchanges have been inadvertently shelved by China due to a lot of inexplicable reasons. Lots of misunderstanding, mistrust and misguidance keep springing up. This shows how important continuous exchanges and meetings promoting mutual communication and understanding are!.
After the meeting of the Australian and Chinese Foreign Ministers, both sides have put forward many constructive suggestions. They will also strengthen their beliefs of mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences. Only in this way will mutual understanding and mutual trust be deepened.
For example, Australian Prime Minister Morrison announced, during China-Australian Foreign Ministers' meeting in Beijing, that he would provide new assistance to the Pacific Island countries, stressing that it is time to open a new chapter in our relations with Pacific neighbours. This was the right thing to do. China has also helped build some infrastructure projects in some South Pacific Island countries in need of assistance. This, intentionally or unconsciously, inspired the enthusiasm of Australia. It is also a good thing for all of us to support each other and help the small and poor countries to become prosperous and with mutual beneficial result.
But some bad media have reacted by treating the Australian Prime Minister's remarks as hostile to China. Fortunately, China's foreign minister has a big heart and stressed that "China and Australia can cooperate on the Pacific island issues"."Australia and China have common interests in terms of regional growth and prospects", the Australian Foreign Minister also stated in return.
Therefore, I always stress that Australia and China should maintain close exchanges. From the top to the people, continuous exchanges and visits are indispensable. Don't be suspicious of each other because of the different policies from time to time, and do not stop or reduce the exchange and dialogue. Many a time, this action will inadvertently lead to more negative effects and misunderstandings. These misunderstandings and diplomatic rift could have been alleviated otherwise with continuous dialogue an exchanges.
More often than not, there are irresponsible media that report indiscriminately and deliberately stir up trouble to boost their business interests. Some leaders fall for it too!
China has its faults and so does Australia. If the media rant has led to less communication and dialogue between the two countries, then the affected parties may not know where and what the misunderstandings are.
China and Australia have signed strategic partnership agreements. The best way to foster better relations is to continue building closer network of direct communication and dialogue between the two countries, rather than through the mass media. The relationship between Australia and China can be better and move further!
